LE PHOTOJOURNALISME : UNE PROFESSION EN CRISE PROFONDE
Depuis une quinzaine d’année, il est coutume de dire que le photojournalisme est en crise. Il est en effet de plus en plus difficile pour les photographes professionnels d’avoir les moyens matériels d’exercer leur métier de reporter. La crise économique de la presse et le développement du numérique ont mis à mal le modèle économique de la profession. La disparition des agences photos qui ont fait de la France l’une des grandes places du photojournalisme en est la meilleure illustration. Si ce sujet suscite beaucoup d’interrogations, peu de solutions à l’horizon. Le Festival a pour ambition de contribuer à apporter des réponses.

TROUVER DE NOUVELLES RESSOURCES POUR LE PHOTOJOURNALISME
Saint-Brieuc Agglomération, à l’initiative du projet permet l’amorce et la structuration du festival. Mais ce sont sur les financements privés que se fonde le projet. En effet, la production des reportages est entièrement financée par des fonds émanant d’entreprises privées.
Un fonds de dotation permet notamment de mobiliser des moyens financiers sous la forme de mécénat. Celui-ci permet de récolter les moyens nécessaires au financement des reportages. Sous la présidence de Michel Lesage, les partenaires financiers n’interviennent pas sur la ligne éditoriale.
UNE LIGNE EDITORIALE OUVERTE
Pour la première édition, Didier Rapaud, ancien directeur de l’agence Gamma et ancien rédacteur en chef photo à Paris Match, a occupé la fonction de directeur artistique du festival. Il est en charge de l’appel à projet et de la constitution du jury qui a déterminé le choix des photoreporters sélectionnés.
Aucune thématique n’a été déterminée pour le festival afin de laisser le plus de liberté aux photographes dans leurs propositions. Une des ambitions éditoriales du festival est de montrer le monde dans sa diversité.
UN EVENEMENT INTERNATIONAL
Suite au premier appel à projet, plus de 300 dossiers originaires de 40 nationalités différentes ont été déposés (Etats-Unis, Canada, Japon, Italie, Espagne, Suisse, Royaume-Uni, Géorgie, Argentine, Israël, Bangladesh, Pays-Bas, Chine, Belgique, Suède, Turquie, Congo, Russie…). La sélection des photographes par le jury, sans critère d’origine, est pour plus de la moitié constituée de photographes étrangers.

PHOTOJOURNALISM, A PROFESSION IN CRISIS
For about fifteen years, it is now common to say that photojournalism faces a crisis. It is indeed becoming more and more difficult for professionnal photographers to get the material resources to practice their job. The economic crisis in the press sector and the development of digital publishing have undermined the economic model of the field. The vanishing of photos agencies that used to make France one of the biggest places of photojournalism gives evidence of this observation. The topic rises quite a lot of questions, but few solutions in perspective. The festival aims at contributing to bring answers.
FIND NEW RESOURCES FOR PHOTOJOURNALISM
Saint-Brieuc Agglomération, at the origin of the project, enables the initiation and structuring of the festival. But the project is based on private funds. The production of reports is indeed totally financed by funds from the private sector. An endowment has been settled, to collect financial support through sponsorship. The financial partners then do not have any scrutiny on the editorial line.
AN OPEN INTERNATIONAL LINE
No specific theme was required for the selection, in order to leave the photographers the highest level of freedom in the choice of their proposals. The festival aims at showing the world in its diversity.
THE JURY
Established by Didier Rapaud – artistic director, the 2013 jury festival is composed of :
- Jean-Luc Monterosso, Director of the Maison européenne de la photographie
- Olivier Laurent, Associate editor at the British Journal of Photography
- Gary Knight, Co-founder of VII Agency
- Alain Genestar, chief editor of Polka Magazine
- Annie Boulat, founder of Cosmos Agency
The 2012 jury was chaired by Jean-François Leroy, director of Visa pour l’image in Perpignan, and composed by Ruth Eichorn, Photo Director of Geo Magazine Germany and Guillaume Clavières, current Paris Match photo Director.
AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT
For this second edition, about 300 photographers applied from 46 countries.
For the first edition, the call for projects generated more than 300 applications from 40 countries, from India to Georgia. The jury selection of photojournalists, without any ethnic criteria, is almost half composed by foreign photographers.
